Tranny Trouble

How can I tell if it is the torque converter or the transmission?

I put a used torque converter in my car about 4-6 months ago...will after about a week it started making bad vibrating/poping noises at idle conditions...but anything above 20 mph and it would go away...performance was fine so I disregarded bc I asked the guy who put it in and he said that he did not know...(I know)...well now 4-6 months later I go to give the car hell and it flashes up to 3500 rpms and you can feel it start to pull but then it stops just feels like you popped it into neutral...and it does it no matter at whats speed you do get on it at. But the car is driveable...as long as you are being nice...so is it the torque converter or the transmission?

Could be the one way clutch in the converter or could be the trans I would pull the pan and then tell us whats in it.

ok so have not had a chance to drop pan but I smelled the transmission fluid and it smelled burnt...my mechanic friend told me that this means the transmission is gone

If the trans smeels burned and the symptoms you describe I would say you need a trans.

I saw on your website that the level one trans has a "bite" at wot...what does that mean as appose to a stock tranny with a shift kit and a 3600 stall...

Its means it will have a very firm shift at WOT like the shift kit you mention and it will have comfortable but firm shifts at lighter throttle opening.
