tranny too cool
tranny too cool
K guys i have asked about this b4. My 4L60E is stock except for the line pressure raised. i run a 24K B&M cooler..i also installed a temp guage and i put the sender in the upper driver side port hole. it gives accurate readings. heres my question...i will drive my car for 25 minutes and the needle will just barley after 25 mins start to move past 100 degrees...then it will sit around 105 from there on...it WILL RISE to say 125 if i get on it HARD for a while but only when i do this...my question is ..am i harming anything by running this cool? is there anything such as too much cooling in a 4L60E? and am i losing performance (even though it shifts damn good and quick. I just feel like running 100-105 degrees is too cold to run all the time..am i wrong?
Re: tranny too cool
Well, I cant speak of the 4L60E, but on my Dad's duramax truck, the Allison tranny will only run a bit over 100 if you're driving around under cool conditions. And that's with factory cooling.
Re: tranny too cool
I know engine oils hit their peak operating efficiency in the 180 to 200 degree range. Out of that range they don't perform their tasks as well.
Tranny fluid is basically just a modified hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic fluid doesn't really have a peak efficiency operating temp, AFAIK. You can run it too hot and damage it (thermal breakdown), but not sure about the cold side of it. But tranny fluid takes on many tasks... it's a lubricant, coolant, and hydraulic fluid meant for operating mechanical parts. I did hear one time that the best temp to run it is as close to 150 degrees as possible. But there hasn't been much discussion on best temperature to run it and that statement above could have just been someone's opinion. I've been around heavy equipment for years and the most important thing to us at the shop is just to keep the fluid from overheating, never really worrying about it being too cool. Never had any problems from the machines running the fluid too cold.
Some tranny builders will say keep it as cool as possible, so take it for what it's worth.

Re: tranny too cool
ya thanks guys i was just hoping that it was not bad b/c on most trips it tends to run real cool...but if i stop at a toll and then get on it throiugh the gears it will heat up a bit but never over 140...but then cruising back to 105...seems like it likes to stay around 105-110 all the time
Re: tranny too cool
i was told by my tranny rebuilder to get the biggest tranny cooler i could find...so when a local parts store went out of business i got the one that's about half the size of the radiator...it was a paint to isntall, but hey, if the pro chevy tranny guy says get it and it's cheap, consider it done
Re: tranny too cool
i had an a/c condensor to use as a trans cooler, but i couldnt make it fit in my 94 Z =/ i ended up with a medium sized b&m supercooler about 1/4 the size of the radiator... dunno how it works yet though as my car is still in the shop gettin the new trans built and installed
but if anyone has any suggestion on makin room for the a/c condensor im all for still usin it!
