tranny rebuild
hey guys i was lookin on ebay for a rebuild kit. how do i know which one i will need? or should i just let the tranny shop replace what is needed? also what parts do you think are a must have to help beef up my tranny a lil bit? any info would be great! thanks
Re: tranny rebuild
There is probably not a real good kit to be found on ebay to rebuild a 4l60e properly, I know pro-built has a kit they sell but I wouldn't recommend doing the rebuild unles you are extremely confident in your ability. And no offence with you asking what is needed, I must tell you to have a pro do it.
Even the local tranny shops screw up the 60e when they do rebuilds, if you search you will find too many people complaining that there local shop that has a good rep just rebuilt there tranny and it has burned up again!
The problem is that unless you go to a good performance tranny builder that specializes in GM trannies, you will more then likely end up needing the tranny rebuilt again shortly! most shops don't do research into what is good or bad and tey just replace things that are on the build list from the manufacturer, and the manufacturer replaces the sub-par items with more sub-par items. Specificly the input sprag, GM uses a new sprag, but if the replace it with and style older one it will be soo much better.. Things like that are all over a 4l60e rebuild and I know Frank from CPT knows all about them. Pro-built knows there stuff but I am still a little leary about some of the things they use and some of the things that don't replace.
Check my sig for info about CPT.

You need synchros and bearings, assuming the gears and shafts are intact. I would say organizational skills and a general knowledge of how everything goes together. There's an Adobe T56 manual somewhere online too that could help. The Helm manual I just got also has an entire breakdown of all the parts. You'll need some specialty tools but nothing major.
It's certainly easier than an auto, there's no clutches, bands, springs, *****, valves, etc.

Until I opened my browser with your response, (Did you even read the thread?) I never saw "fstenuf" original question, all I saw was 1SlowFormula as the first question. I stand corrected.
Re: tranny rebuild
i should have probably explained the situation first. i was having trouble gettin it into first, so i had to try to force it in there like 2-3 times before it went into place. and i had no reverse at all. so then one time i was pounding it through the gears and hit third but when i released the clutch i got nothin! then shortly after words i had no first. sorry about the miss-understanding.
Is there anything i will need to do to my Street twin? will i need the manuel to help install that? cuz i don't have one. does anyone know where i can get one?
thanks for your help!
