tranny puzzle

Background: 93 z28 with a 4l60. driving down the freeway, passing a car at 3/4 throttle and the car reved as in neutral and lost 4th gear. I could not manually or auto (having shifter in the overdrive position) shift into 4th. Over time lost the full auto function and had to manually shift through the gears to have the car shift properly.

Fast forward to last week. Has the tranny pulled by TDP (more on that later) and dropped it off at RPM for a stock rebuild. Got the tranny back, reinstalled and it shifted fine, for about 2 miles. Then it started to do the same thing as before, execpt with some coaxing, it would shift into 4th. All of the gears hold strong when you stomp on the gas, so there is no slipping. Fluid is full and new. Before the rebuild, the gears would also hold strong with no slipping.

Put the car in overdrive and take off, it will shift into 1st fine, 2nd great, but would automatically shift past there. If I keep the gas at about 1/2 throttle, shift the car into neutral and then back into say drive, the car will shift into 3rd. But no further. Shift it back into nuetral and then into overdrive, 4th. Now the car will drive normally for 2-3 miles, then it back to the shifting game.

Also, when the car is in 2nd and the shifter is in overdrive, you can give it gas, but there is no forward motion until 3500-4000 rpm. As soon as you get the car to go through the gears like normal, it shifts where it is supposed to and tightens up like a normal converter.

The only drivetrain mods are
hypertech stage 2 chip
alum ls1 driveshaft w/ new brut force u joints
Vigi 9.5" 2600 stall
and of course the stock rebuild

Sorry for the book, but I am stumped. I want to thank Jason at TDP for all of his time and effort. He drove back out to his shop after the problems started and stayed out there until 10:30 trying to help figure out the problem.
