Tranny opinion
Hey guys, I need an opinion on my A4's behavior.
Today on my way to the highway the car seemed to shift very soft.
On the highway I was fine going 65-75 m.p.h. no problem.
20 minutes later I got off the highway to do local driving.
After the first stop light, as I went to go the car acted as
though I was "riding the clutch". Also at this point the car
did not want to shift out of first, and when she did, she slipped
the whole time in second if I tried to accelerate. Never saw
third gear.
15 minutes later I got to my destination. Half hour later I started
her up and checked the tranny fluid. The level is on the money.
So much for a simple solution.
I drive, car is riding normal, all gears, all speeds.
20 minutes later the “riding of the clutch” thing began again.
For some reason I checked my temp gauge. Just a hair of 185.
So I pull over, shut her down and let it cool off for 10 minutes.
Started it up ran the heat full blast. As soon as the needle dropped
below 185 I start to drive.
Again back to normal, all speeds, all gears. 15 minutes later the
tranny acted up again. I went through the cooling down thing
and again all returned to normal.
I get back on the highway and she is running like a champ.
Get off the highway all is good until I approach my neighborhood.
So this time I shut her down & let it roll to a stop. I stop
and fired her up again and she drives right.
What do you guys think the problem may be. Can tranny problems
be heat related? Is it mechanical or can the computer screw with the
tranny?
Sorry for the long post guys, but I want you all to understand what
it's doing.
Thanks for all opinions.

How many miles on the tranny?? Sounds like it's deffinately heat related. The clutch packs are probably burned and the higher temp is causing you to notice it. It's time to start thinking rebuild. Or you may want to flush the fluid and put a new filter and tranny cooler in and cross your fingers and hope. But I'd doubt it. Might want to save the $.
dude, im having the EXACT same problem with my 93 crown vic
i was just about to post asking the same questions as you, why its only doing it after about 20 minutes or so of driving?? when cold, its fine. after 20 minutes, forget about it. mine happened last week. i checked my oil, and it was burnt (black). changed it out, new filter as well, was slightly better but not by much. ive started shopping around for a used one (not ready for a rebuild just yet (got other stuff to pay)). i was thinking maybe a tranny cooler might help, (on mine, due to the fact it only does it when hot), but considering you have one, and its doing the same, i dont think thatd help
.im no expert by any means, but im thinking its rebuild time for you as well
hth and ttt for ya

Yeah, I've had problems with tranny's. I've gone through 3 in the last year and a half. Finally put in a tranny cooler. Tell ya what though, It's expensive as hell paying for a rebuild, then when the tranny craps out after 3 months of driving it's a PITA to get them to redo it. I paid 1,200$ for a new GMPP (GM Performance Parts) tranny with a 3 year warranty from the dealear, and it's already paid off. (had to get another tranny after 6 months) Anyways, it has upgraded servos, shift kit and higher stalled Tourqe converter installed. You might want to check that option out.
