Tranny Cooler

I have a couple questions. I have a 3500rpm stall on a '96 Z28 w/4 speed automatic transmission.

1) How long and fast can I drive before my tranny gets too hot and starts to damage the tranny and converter?

2) Can I replace the AC condensor for a trans cooler, will the trans cooler need any kind of mounting brackets or modifications?

3) How do you tie in the lines to the transmission when installing a trans cooler? Can somebody give me some kind of step by step instructions.

I can provide whatever information you need. Basically, I drive my car no more than 10-15 miles at a time because I'm afraid I'm going to burn up my new stall. I'm going to install a trans cooler, still shopping for something that'll keep it cool when racing (drag for now). Any help on product, installation or basic tech info on how long it takes to burn up a converter will help.

Thanks.

I removed my AC condenser and mounted the cooler to the slots on the radiator that used to hold the condenser. I built brackets from aluminum angle stock and notched them to fit the slots. The cooler is a B&M Super Cooler, model 70274 (the largest one they make). I ran -6 braided line from the transmission cooler fittings straight to the cooler. I do not run through the cooler in the radiator. Most transmission builders will tell you that this will cause the trans fluid to overheat, but I have a temp gauge in the pan (that I have tested to be sure it is accurate) and have never seen temps higher than 150 deg F (even sitting in traffic on a hot day). Running the fluid through the radiator may actually cause it to run hotter, plus you run the risk of getting coolant into the transmission should the heat exchanger in the radiator ever fail.
