tranny cooler.

None, keep your factory water cooled unit. Your going to be hard pressed to find an air cooled unit that will be as efficient as the water cooled unit especially without a fan assist.

i know i already have a factory cooler, but i figured since my tranny has quite a few miles on it i might as well have the added insurance. should i also switch to full synthetic fluid and swap the filter when i put the new converter in?

Read that first. Stacked plate coolers are the best, and pretty much the bigger you get the better.
If you are unsure of how many miles are on the current filter, go ahead and change it. You can switch to synthetic if you want, but for a higher miles tranny you can just stick with Dextron III.
