Torsen and Limited slip differentials
Torsen and Limited slip differentials
Will someone explain the difference? Did any Camaros have the torsen?
My door code shows a GU5 code and I understand it is a limited slip w/3:23 ratio
When I turn my rear wheels both turn same way. Does this mean I have a bad LSD?
Clunking when turning corner at about 10-20 mph.
Any problem driviong for a while?
I changed the rear end fluid and added th LSD additive from GM.
How long does it take for the additive to work?
Sorry for all the questions but need answers.
Thanks folks1
Torsen is a brand of limited slip made by Zexel-Torsen inc. It is a completely gear driven unit. Limited Slip, according to most people, has springs inside the differential which preloads a clutchpack inside the differential. If you still have the Torsen unit in your rear it shouldn't turn both wheels unless it is under load from the driveshaft. As for the clunk that is pretty much normal for a Torsen. I had questions about this when I first got my car. There were several people on this forum having the same noise and said it was normal so I'm not too concerned and haven't noticed any problems after 10k mi. About the additive IDK.

Torsen is a style not a brand, Zexel is to torsen as Kleenex is to tissue.
And with a Torsen with the rear up the wheels should spin opposite direction or the other may not move at all. And a Torsen is 100% gears there is no clutch pack or brake cones.

For the price (i think its like $100 or less?) its a great deal.. Smooth operating and there's nothing to really wear out.
Its main limitation of the T2 is if one wheel loses traction totally, then it operates like an open diff.. It needs some tq to operate..
I didn't have any clucking on my oem T2 (although 40k mile later I managed to pop off two bolt heads that caused massive damage) I now have a T2R which works like a dream.

well.. right now i have exhaust, removed cat, o2 sims, homemade intake, air temp mod, and a few other very small goodies.. no biggies at all really.. im looking at like 170 or so to the wheels.. but i am having terrible problems gettign traction even on a brand new set of BFGoodrich g-force T/A's... will this give me what i need? you say it has ot have some torque to get it to move, well im doubting that with my measley 170 hp and 182 or so tq ratings that im going to have to worry about breaking loose both wheels?

Turn the same way with an LSD or Posi.
Well! I opened my differential (wheels turn same direction) and found it is a LSD, but it's called a GOV lock?Anyone else find this in your Maro?
West coast differentials said they are norman in some sports cars and when not appling torque the act open, but when you get on it they lock both back wheels. Very similar ,to torsen.
Miy clicking or clunking is the end play in the wheel bearings, which I any hearing from the differential people, is normal!
Comments from the gallery????
Gov lock
You sure it's a gov lock. Thats a differential GM uses in it trucks. I had one in my 92 chevy 4x4. They work great off road, but according to EATON who makes them they only lock up to 20 mph.
