Time for a new Trans Mount or U-Joint?
Time for a new Trans Mount or U-Joint?
I was pulling out of an intersection and had to get into the far left lane because my left turn was less than 1/4 mile away. Well I was forced to pull into traffic because there was no light and it is the middle of Rush Hour, and I didn't intend on sitting there for the next 5 hours... I gave it about 1/4 - 1/2 throttle accidently chirping the tires as I pull out and get to about 50 MPH within seconds...
During the accelleration I didn't feel a loud "BANG" of a transmission smacking the floor board but I DID feel a strange vibration that increased as the speed increased... It was very constant and didn't fade immediately after I let off the gas, it took about 5 extra seconds but I was still doing the same speed... It feels like constantly running over those Stop Sign Warning Indents on the pavement, or in a VERY light degree, railroad tracks. Felt it all through the shifter and you can hear it alittle too. This can only REALLY be felt during hard accellerations, when cruising at 70 MPH, I don't feel it... But for the heck of mentioning, you CAN sort of feel it at speeds of 80 and up, but not to THIS degree... If it IS indeed a U-Joint, I am confident that I can lower a driveshaft; however, can I change a U-Joint myself or do I need special tools?
Edit: I found out that the factory U-Joint is bonded and needs to be torched... How much did your local shop charge you?

Re: Time for a new Trans Mount or U-Joint?
Before you tear the U-joint or put a new trans mount - check your pinion and driveshaft angles - you want a difference of 2-3 degrees between them. If you have an adjustable torque arm (BMR, UMI, Spoon, etc) you can adjust this angle to address the vibration issue.

i was getting that bad vibration in my camaro once so i went home and was about to start pulling the transmission and i took out the drive shaft first and i played with the u joint and it was sort of stuck and i moved it around and freed it up and i thought hey this might be the problem.....and it was
