Exclamation Ticking timebomb?

My transmission in my 95 Z/28 was making whining noises just a while ago...
Its an A4 with 40,000 miles and I just started driving it on Wednesday. Its been fine until today after school. Put it in gear or reverse it makes a whining noise but if I put it in neutral and rev I don't hear it. So I came home and let it sit there for about 20 minutes, I take it up and down the street and the noise is gone. Is my tranny about to blow up? I'm going to try changing the filter hopefully it has something to do with that. If anybody knows about this let me know.

Dirty fluid or low fluid should be checked.
