Question "Thud" when accelerating

For the past 2 weeks, whenever I take off from a dead stop while giving it moderate throttle, I can feel a "thud"/"slip" underneath my car. It feels like something is loose under there and something isn't quite catching when I'm leaving from a stop. I'm going to tighten everything I can under the car tomorrow, do you any of you have an idea of what this could be?

I would say a broken trany mount. They are comon to break. not hard at all to change takes about 10 min to change out.

When the trans mount breaks the transmission will be be torqued up when accelerating, causing it to hit the floorpan and the "thud" you hear. I'd recommend getting an Energy Suspension polyurathane mount. You can get them from Summit and I've also seen them locally at Autozone.

I'd almost bet you its your transmission mount (like stated above)

Also, check your crossmember and make sure its tight.

Question Re: "Thud" when accelerating

Which piece under the car is the tranny mount(s)? I've never changed one before. Also, when I'm taking the old/broken one out, will the transmission move at all and will I need to support it with a floor jack?

I know the crossmember is the piece that runs perpendicular to the driveshaft, which I'll check as well.

You will need to support it with a floorjack.

You can support it with a bottle jack if you're feeling lucky

Unhappy Re: "Thud" when accelerating

Well, I checked under the car today and to the best of my knowledge, everything seems tight.

It must be something in the transmission. I guess my car's gonna f*ck me with another problem yet again.

Did you try and push the transmission up while you were under there?? It can be difficult to just eyeball the mount and tell if it's bad.

Re: "Thud" when accelerating

Yeah, I did everything to determine if something was loose under there. I got my ratchet set and tightened every bolt I could find (they were already tight), tried pushing on the trans. to get it to move, but it wouldn't budge. I guess that crossmember with the rubber piece between itself and the transmission is the transmission mount, right? I even tried to turn the driveshaft slightly and all I heard was a "click-click" noise when I turned it. Is that normal? As far as I can tell, everything seems tight.

Re: "Thud" when accelerating

Undo the crossmember completely (remove it)

Then, remove the tranny mount.

Once you remove the tranny mount, throughly inspect it. It can sometimes be quite difficult to tell if its in good shape or not, with it on the car.

Re: "Thud" when accelerating

Trust me, when I used to have my automatic tranny, bad tranny mounts was a near everyday occurance. I then broke down and bought a vibration-fortified polyurethene mount ( Energy Suspension) LOL

All in all, I probably broke 5-6 stockers, I never broke the poly mount. Accually I'm using it with my 6speed now.

I bet its your mount

Re: "Thud" when accelerating

It does sound like the trans mount. But also check the torgue arm to make sure it's not loose.Another way to check the trans mount is use a jack(preferably a roll around)and lift up on the tailshafy of the trans.Observe the mount(it is the rubber piece between the crossmember and the trans you saw)for movement.Checking the bolts won't give it away because they gennerally(might be 1 in 50 chance they are loose). The Poly mount is extra insurance against having to replace to soon again.Plus it gives a firmer mounting point for the trans.
