thoughts on locking up in the middle of 3rd gear ?
a little info 1st. I have an Art Carr 4L60E and 3200 stall. The tranny and stall was made to be able to be locked up in 3rd gear. But Art Carr said unless I was running a Turbo I want to leave my 3rd gear unlocked. My engine builder says LOCK 3rd gear. So we thought about leavign it unlocked for the 1st part of 3rd, THEN locking the converter up at about 100 MPH. Has anyone ever tried this ?

Re: thoughts on locking up in the middle of 3rd gear ?
i may be wrong but i think factory locks them in 3rd already around 95 at WOT. if the converter is built to hold the hp then go for it. butr if you reach the mph you lock it at and it feels sluggush to engage or hold then unlock it.
basically i would be concerned about to converer holding, i know mine doesnt so i cant lock it. but it would help the trap speed a little.

Art Carr says the the converter and tranny WILL handle lock up. However they said to have a .3-.5 second delay on the TCC clutch on the 2-3 shift because you should'nt lock the converter while shifting because its rough on the transmission.

If the torque converter is matched to your particular vehicle, then locking it will slow down the vehicle at WOT in the quarter mile. If you pick up speed, then the torque converter was not built right. Remember, when you lock the TC, you have no more torque multiplication, and now you have the added horsepower loss of the automatic, as compared to a manual transmission.
