Is there a special tool for rebuilding a T-56?

I have a T-56 Transmission and I am going to rebuild it. I have done transmissions before but is there any special tool to rebuild this thing? I had someone tell me there wasnt and another tell me there was. My syncro's are bad and I can't even get it into gear sometimes and it gets stuck in gear, sometimes it grinds, and pops out. Thanks for any information.

I've never had one apart but it is my understanding that there are several special tools for rebuilding a T56.

Well the guy that said there was a tool was an ASE Mechanic and he rebuilds them, he said there is only one tool and it's to get the gears on/off the shaft and you can only get it from Snapon for $300.00. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this tool, never seen or heard of the tool(s) and cant find them.

I searched Snap-on and found nothing, the only thing it shows is the seal remover and installers which arent that important. I really think this guy is making up this tool so that I will just let him rebuild it. I know it's not easy but he said he'd do it for $400.00 + parts and I said I'd do it myself and he said but there's a $300.00 tool so I think he's just trying to get my business. If anyone finds the tool let me know.

I think you may need a pair of good snap-ring pliers ..... not sure about any other "special" tools though???

If you find out, let me know ..... mine's coming apart this winter too!!

Do you think it's going to be difficult? I think I can do it, done everything else to my car, new stroker, tuning, etc. Anyone rebuilt one that can give me some pointers. Thanks

There is a special tool called a Gear Puller like the guy said. If you look at the online service manual for the T-56 transmission you will see this. There are a couple more specialized tools to aid in the rebuilding of this transmission, but I can't think of them off my head. I'm not sure on pricing of this "Gear puller" tool.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my T-56. I'm getting ready to drop the transmission out of my 94 Z28 in the next few weeks, but I am sending mine off to www.t56rebuilds.com . They offer very, very good deals. I'd check out their website, because they don't charge very much for labor. Not to mention they have built the transmission for one of the fastest T-56, regularly aspirated LS1 Z28's. I was thinking about doing my transmission rebuild, but it's alot of work, considering there are about 250 parts in just the transmission. A lot of very small pieces, which could easily be left out, lost Etc. I am definitely sending mine off to their shop. They also offer a 1 year warranty on all of their work, and I spoke with Amber today from their site, and she said they might offer free 2 way shipping again in the month of December like they offered this past month of November.

I wouldn't recommend doing this rebuild yourself. I would spend the extra money to have it done by a professional. Because to rebuild my transmission to fix my 2nd gear issue, and reverse issue it would have cost me about 800$ in just parts, not including bearings which are another 169$ for a full set. Amber quoted me about 1300$ to completely rebuild my transmission including labor fee's, and parts so I would definitely check them out, and just talk to them to see what they can do for you. To my knowledge they are the best reputable shop that specializes in nothing but the rebuilding of our transmissions in our car. They offer a wide variety of packages, depending on what your plans are with your car. They told me that their base package of a rebuild is good all the way up to 700HP, and with a year's warranty.

If you need any more advice just let me know,
-Dax

Here's some advice someone gave me:

In the last pages of that manual they describe the endplay tool you will need. That is the only tool I would call "specialized." You will also need a dial indicator set and some shims for adjusting endplay. I went out and got a hydraulic press to make pulling and pressing on gears a lot easier, if you have a harbor freight nearby you can get a good setup for $100 or so. If you do get a press make sure you buy one with a tall stand (mine sits over 4 ft high) or build a stand yourself. You will see what I mean once you get working on it. There are 2 pairs of snap-ring pliers that will cost you $10 each.

You can get around without using a press, and you could probably do it without adjusting endplay (just make it as tight as possible while still moveable) but I would strongly suggest getting experienced help with that part. That will be the difference between your transmission working okay and your transmission lasting 250,000 miles. The pliers can be done without but they will save you so much time you will disagree with me.

Other than that it's just basic hand tools. If your bearings are all good you wont have to pull any of those (you won't have to buy new ones either) and just hope that your gears are all in good shape (easy to replace, just expensive).

Hope that helps. If you have any more questions just ask.

You may also want to consider sending the tranny to T56rebuilds, it may very well be worth the money if this is the only rebuild you ever plan on doing.

You can view a service manual of the T56 here, http://www.tremec.com/English/media/...ice_Manual.pdf

it tells you everything you will need to know, including a full breakdown diagram of the tranny, as well as a parts schematic list.

Haha.

I was going to reply to this but it seems I already have

Thanks for saving me the time Dax

Hey Mike,

You might want to check with T56 rebuilds and see what they would charge for a rebuild with no upgrades. You might get off a little cheaper.

$400 for labor doesn't sound too bad, but if you don't trust the guy I wouldn't work with him. Once he pulls that tranny apart you owe him money, and all he has to do is tell you something needs to be replaced....that'll cost X amount more....and there is really nothing you can do.

Are you supplying parts or is he?

Jeremy

I want to thank you again for the help Jeremy. I applied for a school loan for the upcoming semester, and I requested $1500 more than needed for tuition. I should be granted to loan in the next week or 2, soon as I hear word from this, I'm dropping the tranny out and mailing it off to T56Rebuilds. Especially after speaking with Joe and Amber from the website. They answered every question I had and more.

Thanks,
Dax Adkins
