TH 350 Question

I have a 1978 Firebird, and there is a starting problem. The starter works fine (it was tested). So I'm thinking there is some sort of ignition problems. I'm thinking that the neutral safety on the transmission may be the problem. Does anyone know how to check this? So far the ignition looks okay. The car had been sitting for a while but I want to get it running again. Any suggestions? Thanks.
