T56 Transmission Troubles?

I have a 2002 SS with 28k miles. For a couple months, the transmission would slip out of third, and a couple times it would get stuck in fourth gear. We ended up tearing the transmission apart, and found it was the 3-4 synchronizer keys were broken. We then found the 5-6 shiift rail was bent as well, so that needed to be replaced.

So I was wondering if anyone else had this problem, because I hear it's a common problem, and I want to complain to GM and see if I can get some of my money back. Thanks for any help!

By the way, thegearbox.org is a great site for transmission parts, and saved me a few hundred dollars, and I recommend checking them out if you need some T5 or T56 parts.

The only way that these things happen is if you beat on the car and GM is not going to pay for abusive damage on a 8 year old car.

And this is NOT an engine tech question so I'll move it to drivetrain where it belongs.

I wondered about that...how do I move it? EDIT: Thanks to whoever moved it!

And I haven't abused the car. I bought it with 15k, so I don't know what the previous owner did, but the clutch had very little wear, so I don't think it was abused.

Common if its beat on, or someone is real hard on the shifter. Mine did the same thing.

If it was having 3-4 problems I would replace that fork with a steel one while you are at it. Very common for those to bend too.

A good shifter with stops in it will help. Or if you can find another creative way to keep the forks from over extending.

Mine had an aluminum fork, and yes I did put a steel one in. I also bought billet keys so they won't break again, like those cheap stamped steel ones did.
