t56 reinstallation

Just got my T56 back from the rebuilder on Friday, and I'm planning on putting it in this afternoon.

I just want to check a few things before I get started:

1. Are there torque specs for the trans-to-bellhousing bolts?

2. Are there torque specs for any of the other bolts I'll be reinstalling? (torque arm, k-member, etc)

3. I have to wait until the driveshaft is installed to fill it with fluid, right?

Any other tips to simplify the reinstallation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The T56 service manual on shbox.com had answers to some of my questions.

1. 55 lb-ft.

2. Trans-to-crossmember: 35 lb-ft

3. It's not clear if this is required, but the steps in the instructions imply that yes, I have to wait until the driveshaft is installed.

I would wait on the fill. If you don't have the car dead level or even a little nose down the fluid can spill out the rear of the trans.

I don't know why you wouldn't wait to put the fluid in, but unless you have it tilted back it won't come out. You can just eyeball it and see that the fill plug is low enough that it won't spill out.

It's impossible to put the trans in without tilting it unless you're going to take the time to remove the Y-pipe. We considered removing mine, but the bolts that connect it to the cat pipes were not in good shape and I would have had to replace them completely. Since I don't have an aftermarket Y-pipe yet, that seemed counterproductive.

Anyhow, the trans is in the car now. No fluid in it yet, and no shifter on top, but that's all it needs.

Fill it from the top before you bolt the shifter on! That's WAY easier than filling through the fill plug .

There are torque specs for everything, bell housing to block and trans to bellhousing.

I wasn't so much asking whether specs exist as what exactly those specs are.

I didn't remove the bellhousing from the block, so no worries there.
