t56 rebuild ?'s
t56 rebuild ?'s
OK, so I have a few questions here, I hope somebody can help:
1. The outer ring of the synchros have a little Y stamped on one of the keyways, I didn't note the position of this Y when I took the synchros apart, so does this Y matter?, if so how can I determine which of the 3 keyways that it lines up with and 2 does the side of synchro with the Y face the tailhousing of the tranny or the bellhousing.
2. I have 4 chipped teeth on my countershaft gear assembly, they didn't seem to cause any problems when the tranny was together, but I certainly don't want to reinstal the assembly this way. From the 1 site that I can find on the net that lists this part, the price is ~$800, I sure don't want to pay this either, so is it possible to get these chips repaired at a gear or welding shop? I would think that the teeth could be welded and reground to shape. Is this possible, is this sort of thing common? How much should I expect to pay for this service and can anyone reccomend a shop in the Denver area that can do this? (I have tried googling to get info on this type of repair, but have come up with no real results)
Thanks!!!!

Re: t56 rebuild ?'s
I've have managed to have to rebuild my T56 in both my 95 and my 97.
The 95 I jambed the 5th gear blocker and was not able to down shift from 6th to 5th. Have no idea how this happened. The 97, ripped all the synchornizer teeth off 2nd gear with a stock engine and hitting a pothole go figure, normal driving. I was a little upset with that the car only had 32K on the odo but well out of warranty by time. The only luck I had with that was none of the broken pieces got between any of the gears to break a bunch more stuff.
I had good luck with Liberty Gear (313) 278-4040 out of MI a couple years ago. Not sure if they are still in business though. Great people to work with and very, very reasonable prices on their used stuff which they make sure are OK before sending out. Gears are good as long as they are not broken. I don't have any gear noise at least I can't hear it over the exhaust so no problem with me. They also sent a manual to do the rebuild for free. It had all the important stuff like which way to assemble the synchronizer as I remember.
Best of luck.
