T56 rebuild - help me make a parts list.

My clutch is messed up, so the tranny is out of the car. A few years ago I had adjusted the stops on the shifter too close, and it poped out of reverse. By the time I fixed it, the tranny got messed up, and now it does it all the time.

First off, is this most likely just a bad syncro? I guess when I pull it apart tomorrow Ill find something worn.

What else should I replace while its out and apart? Ive heard shift forks should be replaced. Id like to go with the viper output shaft, but I dont think Im gonna have the money for that. I just want to get it going right, and take care of other somewhat cheap parts and try to make it a little stronger, and make it last a little longer.

What do you guys recommend?

A synchro rebuild kit, along with a steel 3-4 shift fork would be a start.

When you tear the transmission apart reverse is the first gear you can take off. So you might want to consider just fixing that gear instead of tearing the whole transmission apart. The other thing to check would be the reverse lockout solenoid. It's apparently quite problematic and knocks the shift lever out of reverse if it's damaged.

The viper output shaft is a little expensive and virtually means tearing down your entire transmission. I think you also have to reshim everything and check contact patterns and backlash settings, etc. It'd be something I'd recommend only if you have a legitimate reason for getting it. It's not really a "while I have the transmission out" type of upgrade.

I checked it out today. Reverse looks to enguage normal, but where the copper gear(blocker ring?) meshes with the synchro assy, there is a little wear. I wonder if misadjusting my shifter could have messed up the lockout solenoid somehow, and that is all thats wrong.

I'll try to take some pics tomorrow. Maybe you could look at them and see if it looks normal.

Is that the part that you're talking about that's worn?

Yea. I took pics, but they came out all blurry. Suprising to me is that the brass part isnt hardly worn at all. Oh well. I was told I could just turn the synchro around, and it looks that way to me too. Looks like I get this fixed for free

So how prone are the 3-4 shift forks to breaking?

Who told you that you could just turn it around?

I hope you're not refering to this thread: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=367629

Since I haven't actually tested that transmission since I flipped the synchro sleeve.

Yes, that thread, and people I work with who have experiance with trannies. It should work out just fine. Im still debating the steel 3-4 shift fork. I guess it depends on how much I end up spending on a new clutch.
