T56 problems, help!

A couple days ago, I was at a stoplight and while accelerating normally it popped outa first really hard. (It's never done that before, and it only happened the once, so I figured I just had it half engaged)

So I was driving home this evening pull up to a stop sign, and go to put the car in first (94 trans am stock, 120,000 miles)

It took quite a bit of effort to get it in first. Shift to second, same thing, more effort required then normal, 3rd was just a bit harder then normal.

Since I was only a block or 2 I drove the rest of the way home, kept it in 3rd. When I got in the driveway, I pushed the cluch in as far as it would go, and when you put it in gear you can hear the transmission.. 'whiring' (This is with the clutch pedel fully depresed also)

I gave it a bit of gas, with clutch fully in, and went to put it in first, and the car moved forward a bit.

Help please, I'm lost.

Re: T56 problems, help!

A couple of guesses that come to mind are:
1. Your clutch is going, and/or heated up and wouldn't let you fully engage first so it popped out when you let of the clutch.

2. The 1-2 slider assembly (aka syncho) inside the transmission.

Just thought of a third one...
3. Possibly the bolts on your shifter are loose????

Re: T56 problems, help!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was thinking clutch as well. I'm hoping the actual transmission itself is fine, as I'm guessing a clutch is going to be a heck of a lot cheaper then a tranny.

Not sure on the shifter bolts, will take a look.

Just trying to get some ideas of parts I should try to round up, and about how much time to set aside as I will not be able to do anything till the weekend.

Re: T56 problems, help!

My guess is the clutch too. If you're holding the clutch all the way in, and the car still moves when you give it gas, obviously the clutch is still engaged a bit.

The bad news is that running the car like that will cause a lot of damage to the synchros and to the clutch. The synchros match the speed of the input shaft with the speed of the output shaft for the given gear, but if the clutch is still engaged the synchros have to match the engine RPM as well. If it takes an 11" clutch disc with 95 inches^2 of surface area to do that, imagine how much wear it would do to a blocker ring with 5 inches^2 of surface area. On top of that, the dog teeth on the synchro will be trying to engage when the rpm difference is too large, and that will smash the teeth and wear them down.

So, first things first, stop driving it. Second, get the clutch fixed. If you still have issues, rebuild the synchros.

Re: T56 problems, help!

Yeh, I have not driven it at all. Just the 2 blocks home from when it started happening. It has sat in my driveway since tuesday.

I unfortunatly do not have many tools at my house, but a couple friends that are willing to help me, if we can get it to their house.

Any good tow points, and will towing it a bit in neutural be fine?

Neutral should be fine, but, I'd test to make sure by leaving it in neutral and giving it gas. If it moves, then it'd be a bad idea to tow it on the rear wheels. Lots of times tow trucks will have dollies for the rear wheels, if they do, get them to use them.

Call a rollback. Much simplier. OR just get your friends to bring their tolls and a jack and stands over. It doesn't take a store full of tools to change out a clutch. Just a few sockets, extensions, rachet and wrenches.

Re: T56 problems, help!

Well, me and my friend had a brief look at it today. The hydraulics are fine. All gears are really hard to engage, and all make a whirring noise.

It happened pretty much 'instantly' so I don't know how I could go from a perfectly working clutch to a clutch that doesn't really work at all.

My friend thinks it is the Diaphragm spring. Unfornatly, parts stores here say you can't just replace that, they say you need to replace the entire clutch.

I wouldn't really mind that, but stores here want 650$ CDN for a clutch. Anyone know if it's possible to just replace the spring, and or possible to get a clutch for much cheaper then that in Canada?

Thanks.

Try odering one from summit or somewhere in the U.S. But if you don't have American dollars on hand then you'll have to give up more of your Canadian dollars. But when you equal it all out it will stay the same which ever you pay with.

Thanks for the reply. Were you able to just get a new spring? Searching around and I still cannot find one.

I think he ment the springs in the clutch disc...they are not a seperate item...you'll have to purchase either a disc not recommended...or a whole set recommended...I had a clutch take a dump on me I had f'ed it up pretty good wouldn't engage when hot or disengage if it heated up in gear...so I too go with a clutch problem...

Re: T56 problems, help!

Since you have to take it apart either way, I would do that first to find out what exactly is wrong before you go ordering up new parts. It would be a shame if you ordered something you didn't need and had to send it back and pay re-stocking fees, then order the right part.

Just my .02 though.
