stupid newbie trans. question

I just got a 94 z28, and the shift selector only has 2nd, drive, and overdrive. Is it not suppose to be a 1st gear selection also or did I get a car with a messed up option package or something? Also what I'm I suppose to do when I start racing and I need to start in 1st? Excuse the newbie, and Thanx

Crackhead,

My 94 Z is the same way, I believe the "performance rear end" extra option on this car that included a 3.42 or 3.73(not sure which) gear ratio only had the 1st position. There is some kind of restriction in your gear selector that wont let it go down to the 1st postion, I think it is a little block or something, i know there is a site explaining how to remove it and get your 1st back, if i find the site address I will let you know, hope this helps. -Matt

Thanks Matt, I'd really be interested in seeing that site if you can track it down.

Your car has 2.73 gears... The performance rear axle for A4 cars meant 3.23's and 1st gear selectable. Worst part about having 2.73's is that if you want to go higher, you will need to get a whole new carrier...

copied this from another post, so here you go:

You can remove the shifter ****, then inside the console their will be two screws (mine are below the change holder but it's a bird), and removing them will allow you to remove the piece of plastic around the shifter. Then you can manually downshift the car (while not running) into 2nd and you'll be able to see the little black piece of plastic that stops it from moving into 1st. Just use a knife and cut it out of the way. Then you'll have 1st gear select.

...or maybe just get a numerically higher gear cut for a two series carrier? Mental note to self: If I ever call Year One to buy stuff don't talk to Nate........

Sure you can do that, but I find it easier to just switch to a 3 series carrier. When you can get a take out carrier from SLP for $99.95 or decide to spend more for a better quality (Eaton maybe). You can get the 2 series gears from Moser, Richmond, or Strange, but I personally know very few people that have ever gone this route. Most usually find a complete rear end for sale from someone that has upgraded to a 12 bolt or 9 inch...

As for not wanting to talk to me if you call Year One, that is fine. You are under no obligation to talk to me, but I do know my stuff... Sure there are things I don't know, but I will tell you rather than feed you a line of bull...

Neat time if you want to take a shot at me, take it private. I am just trying to help out a fellow f-body owner. No need to make it personal.

Just don't say you need what you really don't. Say It is best if you switch to a dirrerent carrier.

Just do the 12-bolt don't waste time and money on the stock rear-end

Just do the 12-bolt don't waste time and money on the stock rear-end. If you plan on putting on any sticky tires.

Just my opinion......
