Strange rear end sound

I have been getting this sound from the rearend for a while now. It sound and feels (since it will shake the whole car) like something is binding up, and then slipping. I used to think it just did it while I was turning, but it seems to do it any time. I think it gets worse after I drive for a while. Last night I jacked up the car and left it in park. With a little effort, I could make the wheel move about 1 inch one way, and then one inch the other way. It felt like something was letting it slip just a little. Does this sound like my posi is going out? I guess I dont know what the symptoms are.

Sounds to me like you just need to change your rear end grease. I used Wolf's Head with limited slip additive (Kendall I believe) and mine has been fine. It used to do that while turning like your.

I replaced it a year or so ago and it never really helped. But I bought some other kind of grease, and didnt put additive in it. It was supposedly made for limited slip rearends. What would you guys recommend putting in there. Is there one kind that works better for our cars and where can I get it. I have Advance Auto, O'Reillys, and Autozone here.

Any new & strange noises from mechanical parts are not a good sign. And the bad news is they don't get fixed by hoping they go away..

Well what I have heard is that after a while the rearend grease breaks down and the plates in the limited slip start to stick. After I changed it a year ago it helped for a while, but it started again. The sound only starts after I drive for a while and thats why I figured it might be grease because the grease heats up and is probably less effective.

No you tool, get off here if your going to be an A$$. Grease is like oil, over time it starts to break down and isnt as effective as it used to be, especially after you drive for an extended amount of time and really heat it up. You go ahead and leave your oil in your car for a year and see how your engine is after that. I was just wondering what the best grease is to use. Its good to know that some people come on here just to act like idiots and instead of offering useful info or advice they choose to attempt to make themselves look smarter than they are. Way to be ACE!!!

What is DUMB, you trying the easy way out. Just pull the cover and see what is wrong or not. Some people with NO Mechancal knowledge trying to act like they know it all. All the grease in the world is not not going to fix a broken part in the rear.

Re: Strange rear end sound

Ok man, I think we are having a real bad case of miscommunication. I am not some newb to mechanical work. I might only be 23 but my dad has had me working on cars since I could walk. I already had the rear cover off and found nothing. There are no metal shavings or any signs of cracks. I also figured it was maybe a axle bearing or maybe even a wheel bearing going out. No such luck. Soooooo here we are. Left with the possibility that it might be the wrong kind of grease I have been using. All I want is a recommendation on a good brand that people have used. My bad for jumping all over ya but you really should just try and answer the questions people are asking and not assume they are just taking the easy way out.
