stock torque converter

Where is the best place and/or price to pick up a stock torque converter for my 94 Z28?
Whats the average price for these, either rebuilding it or a new one?
My old one has been sitting outside for a while, my friend suggested taking that one to a local specialist and having them rebuild it. Said it should not cost more than $125 or may be better to just buy a new one for around the price depending upon shop.
BTW, im the in LA area for anyone that knows local shops here?
Any advice suggestions is appreciated...

I would just look through ebay and see if you can pick up a stock on there that is in good shape. Also you might want to try looking through the ads here in the for sale forum or by posting a thread in the Parts Wanted Forum.

Why do you not want to upgrade to a better one?

Re: stock torque converter

I have had my fun drag racing and hot rodding and need something more suitable for daily driving. I got 14mph in the city. So horrible!!!
I put in my 2500 stall and had 3.73's and was taching like 2700 at 75mph on the highway. Im looking at 2300 max on the freeway and I think going to a factory torque converter will allow for that. I was about to go to 3.08's but I would defnitely rather get rid of my stall converter than the gears.
I have looked into how a stall locks up in combination with gear ratios. I have concluded that my 2500 stall locks up at 2500 and the gears add some rpm.
With a 1650 factory torque converter, I'll be at I think 2200 rpm max with the 3.73's.
Make sense?? any advice? knowledge?

Re: stock torque converter

Man, I just sold mine on Ebay for $13.xx + 18 shpng. Sorry, but I may be getting a new one here if the deal goes through and I'll have a B&M Holeshot 2400 for sale...maybe

Oh and don't worry about a medium stall like a 3000 or lower on the highway at a low rpm. the lockup will take care of that.

Re: stock torque converter

I got a stock one laying around in good shape with 59K on it.. I was actually going to throw it on ebay but with heavy it is, I would imagine shipping to some distance might be quite pricey and just figured that no one would want to pay the shipping. I'll sell you mine for the price of shipping and then some, shoot me a PM with a offer if your interested.

You are going to run 2700 RPM's at 75 mph with 3.73's no matter what stall you have. I run about that with a 4000 stall with a lock up. The only way to change your rpms at cruiseing speed on the highway is to get fifferent gears such as 3.23 or 2.73.

Re: stock torque converter

lockup stalls will lockup at highway speeds regardless of what they're rated for. my buddy has a 4200 stall that when locked up acts the same as any other stall

Re: stock torque converter

From my research I would have to disagree with you on that. That car will only go when it has a load and mine locks at 2500. I have talked to numerous people and it seems to be logically concluded that a 1600 torque converter will tach at ~2300 max with the 3.73's.

I seem to recall prior to the 3.73's and with only the 2500, cruising on the freeway at 2100rpm, but then when I gave it gas it would only lock up and pull at 2500+.

I agree on the stock tq.. mine was also pulling 2700's at 75mph. and with the new 3800 stall still pulls the same, unless I gas it alittle, then it will jump up alittle.

The gears are what's making it tac 2700 rpms at 75 mph. The torque converter should be locked up at that speed anyways so the stall rpm shouldn't make a difference.
