steady "clunk clunk clunk" diff prob?

Hey guys
i have a pretty much all stock 98 z28. This has a posi right? anyways, its making an odd clunk clunk clunk noise pretty much constantly as im driving I thought it was ujoints, but i checked and theyre nice and tight still. So could it be my differential? it doesnt happen more when i turn, just all the time. thanks

It does have a posi aka limited slip diff.

Have you tried changing your Rear End Fluid and add some GM Limited Slip additive yet? I would start there first and see if it goes away.

Thx,
Claude

Pull the cover bolts starting at the bottom...then loosen the top bolt almost all the way out and pry the cover off its seal to drain the fluid...take the cover completely off and see what the inside looks like...look for metal shavings in your fluid and metal stuck on the magnet which should be tack welded inside your cover...If you don't have lots of metal replace the cover either with a gasket, the RTV sealer of your choice (I use black), or a combo of both, and fill with the GM additive first then add quality gear oil until it just runs out of the fill hole...you can siphon, but you'll never really be able to see whats going on inside the rear end...good luck...Go to the dealer for the additive its $7...
