Spec 4 problems.... :(

So today I was driving home. I wasnt hard on my clutch or anything. I downshift from second to first to make a turn. I push in the clutch pedal and it sounds like the clutch is hitting something. It sounds like a playing card in a bicycle spoke. I have a Spec 4. It has about 3,000 miles on it. It was broken in correctly. Any else having the same problem with this clutch? It is a kevlar disc... Seems really weird to me that the clutch is going bad already.

I wonder if one of your hub springs popped out and is caught between the clutch and the flywheel-pressure plate.

This is what the plate looks like...

This is the install complete when I did it.

Maybe the slave cylinder is bad? BTW, those pictures are of the install a long time ago. Im not that fast to take apart the car.

That clutch sure is pretty.....

I'm easter egging here, but did you replace the pilot bearing when you did the clutch?

Re: Spec 4 problems.... :(

Is that the one in the rear of the crankshaft? Like the one in this picture?

If it was the one where you use papertowl and stuff it in there and remove the old one, then no.

Maybe the clutch fork popped off the throwout bearing? might try pulling the slave and checking it out.

Yah, that was going to be my first step. However, my brother in law is using my jack and jack stands... So the project is at a standstill until Sunday Morning. It still engages and will switch gears, its just a harsh engagement. Hopefully its something as easy as the clutch fork.

Re: Spec 4 problems.... :(

I will post tomorrow or monday with the results and some aftermath pictures... Clutch is defiantly toast. I pulled the slave cylinder and there were aluiminum shavings everywhere. I drove the car a block max once I heard the sound. I was actually at the corner shell heading to my house. Literally a block away or less. What APITA! Hopefully Spec covers this under warantee. This is rediculous. My car hasnt even been on the road long enough to test the clutch to its full potential. I dont even have decent street tires.

That pilot bearing looks worn out. Its kinda hard to tell from the pic though. How tight did the install tool fit in there? Was there a lot of play?

Re: Spec 4 problems.... :(

i had a similar problem w/ my first SS had a stock clutch in it. The spring that is on the clutch fork that holds it in place broke. Resulting in the clutch fork contacting the pressure plate whenever i would push down the clutch pedal. You could feel it in the pedal as well. It started very low to the floor and worked its way up to harly being able to disengage the clutch. Pulled trans replaced fork and Viola all was well again
Good Luck keep us posted

Re: Spec 4 problems.... :(

I actually replaced the pilot bearing with a stock bearing when I did my engine install. I didnt see any need to replace it with one that came with spec. So the bearing wasnt used. The install was very tight. I actually had my friend come over and help me install it because the tranny is APITA to remove with one person when the car on jack stands. He has built many engines and installed many car parts. So I know it was installed correctly. Plus its near impossible to mess up a clutch install. Use the install tool and follow the simple instructions. I hope its just as simple as the spring is bad. I have a stock clutch that is brand new and I can install that for the time being. However I really would think Spec's parts should withstand more than some daily driving and getting on it from a roll a few dozen times. My car has 420rwhp and I my tires are worn out so I cannot get traction. So I wouldnt think it would be stressing the clutch out between shifts.

Anyhow, I will take a picture of the aftermath hopefully today.
