so i'm coming back tonight down a fast road and i put it in "D" for some high speed fun. well when it came time for the fun to end i went to push it back into OD but instead accidentally tapped the shifter while my hand was going back and shifted into 2.

to my surprise it shifted

i quickly shifted back into OD and all was good. RPM's didn't go past redline but it sure did scare the crap out of me.

it'll shift into 1st if you tell it to. these late model A4s will stay in 1st and will stay in 2nd/start in 2nd if you put the shifter in that position.

Yeah, I guess with 273's it could be right around there, with my 323's it shifts into 3rd at WOT around 85mph.

it will shift into second anytime you select that gear.(and it'll tear you engine up, too, if you let it)
most 4L60E strategies will command an upshift to second if you try to select first at too high a speed. but it will give you second whenever.

Is that right? I don't want to test it obviously, but i'd sure hope it would have some sort of fail safe for that situation.

I know it doesn't, but i'd hope it would have one for first, which is what you said correct?

the PCM will not allow 1st gear form manual 2nd unless the car is < 30 to 35 mph. if its faster than 35, the PCM will hold second gear instead, even though the shifter is in first.

we are discussing WOT downshifts not upshifts. those upshifts sound about right though.
