Sloppy Shifter
Sloppy Shifter
My father in law has a 96 ss with the 6 speed. His shifter is very sloppy and hard to find gerar sometimes under normal driving/shifting. I am most familiar with this problem on a mazda rx7 and a set of bushings fixes the problem. Is that the case on these cars? He is looking to start upgrading the car and he wants to add a short shifter. Would the short shifter solve the problem, or would it still need some bushings no matter what shifter is in there? I am new to these cars but has always liked them. Plus the more we upgrade his car the more I get to drive it so its win win for me.
Re: Sloppy Shifter
If he buys an entire replacement "short" shifter and not just a short stick then it should solve the issue. Most likely it is the rubber isolator that is installed between the shifter and the stick that is shot.
If that doesn't fix it, then there maybe an issue with the ball/socket where the shifter connects inside the top of the transmission; there is a small plastic piece in there that maybe cracked or broken. You'll be able to see/inspect this when you replace the shifter
The Pro 5.0 shifter is pretty much the best shifter out there; it's the highest recommended shifter on when people as for recommendations.

Re: Sloppy Shifter
There's no "kit" for a short shifter like on some cars. This is just either a short stick; or a short-throw shifter. The Shifter is all one assembly (Although you may have to attach the stick to the shifter as part of installing it).
Order the Pro 5.0, and you won't be disappointed. The shaft comes extra long with extra threads so you can cut it to the length you want (Install it full length first; then test how it feels, and then start cutting small amounts off until you get the **** where you want it.) I cut almost 1" off mine, and have a now discontinued MBA Billet ****; my shifter **** is VERY close to the console, but that's how I wanted it.

Re: Sloppy Shifter
I bought the MGW shifter which is a very nicely crafted and designed piece, but if I were to do it all over again I wouldn't bother with buying a short throw.
With my stock shifter I took a piece of steel rod, milled the bottom flat on both sides and drilled to holes to mount it to the shifter linkage, then threaded the top for a shift ****. Cost like $5 and felt almost the exact same as my short throw (won't feel rubbery like stock). The side-to-side on the MGW is certainly shorter, but the distance forward and back seems pretty much the same.
