depends on when you downshift and the rpm. it should not hurt a thing when done using common sense

Like byrons said, depends on how you are downshifting. If done right it does not hurt a thing. They made that option available for a reason.

Re: is shifting bad on a 4l60e?

I manually shifted mine all the time, TransGo shift kit with a TCI 2800 stall.
The first tranny had just the shift kit in it, and it lasted till about 130k.....not too bad really. The second was a supposed "performance build" done locally and thats when I put the TCI stall in it. It lasted about 24k before losing 3 and 4. I got really frustrated and found a good deal on the TH400 now in my car and I.ll never go back.
In my opinion you don't want to manually shift the 60E, if you wanna beat on your tranny then get a manual valve body TH350/400 or find a good tranny builder (there are a couple on the board) and cross your fingers.

That might be a little harsh. The engine will shift at 50-55mph (with 2.73), so it would be in the RPM really high. Downshifting to second would be fine though.

downshifting to second while running less than 50 i have no power at all until i hit about 45-50...i will be getting a 3.73 soon though and hopefully that will make a huge difference.

any good recommendations on stall converters?
