Don't shift it, let it shift itself. I have heard that launching in manual 1st and then going to drive is beneficial due to more clutches being engaged during launch. Other than that the car will be much more consistent if you let it shift itself and your trans will hold up better.

it also depends on how much wear your trans has too , sometimes it can hang in a gear a lil bit longer when they have alot of miles on them

Let the computer do the work. I start off in 3rd until the 1-2 shift happens than shift it into overdrive for a better 2-3 shift at the track. What I'm doing is what was recommended by some trans people for the best holding power as LearJet was explaining. Before I tried this the trans was not wanting to make the 2-3 shift when i was using the nitrous. I don't expect the stock trans to last long on the bottle but at least for now it's making the 2-3 shift. One other thing recommended was to slightly (1/2 quart) overfill the trans.

When you mod the car you correct the shift points in the tune then let the computer do it's job. Look at my car in my sig. It shifts itself, put it in 3 and punch it. Variations in my et from round to round are .00x if that when the weather is stable.

What you people are probably feeling when in manual mode is the extra line pressure the computer provides vs. normal mode. It's especially higher in 2nd gear. Even part throttle shifting is going to feel harder.
