Shift Kits
Hi Folks,
I'm looking into putting in a automatic shift kit into my z. I have a 96 z28 with a stock automatic trans. I would like to put in a hurts or B&M rachet shift kit into my car. Where could I find ones that will work and fit for my year and are they a good idea to go with? or will they mess up my trans?

The (modified) Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, that I use has proven itself to work very well in these units as long as the 2-4 band & 3-4 clutches are still in good shape. What torque converter are you using? Let me know if I can be of help?

A shift kit can actually prolong trans life in a lot of cases. Automatics use friction material inside them that operate with the same ideas as a clutch in a manual trans, which is to provide a certain amount of slip. The smoother the shift is, the longer the slippage is, which means more of the friction material that is worn away. Of course, if your trans is in bad shape upping the intensity at which pistons apply could just irritate it even more, especially since there will be a bunch of fresh slippery trans fluid in there. If you drop the pan and the fluid looks a brown color or smells burnt you're better off just putting the pan right back on and leaving it alone. I remember dropping my auto trans after it broke and you could smell that something was wrong. Anyway, if your trans is good the main thing to stress is just to follow the directions as closely as possible- & work in a clean environment, getting junk on a valvebody is a good way to screw it up.

Thanks for the helpful information GreenDemon. I really appricate it. Only one problem. Ive been looking around, and I havnt found and places that sell rachet shifters for my 1996 camaro z28. They tranny is automatic and its in good tip top shape. Just hit 80,000 miles on it and I havnt had any problems with it. Anyone know any companys or sites that sell shift kits for automatics trannys on 4th gens?

ok dude... i think you got your mind in a tiny bit of a twist...
there are two things you seem to be talking about
1. is a ratchet shifter
2. is a shift kit
the two things are completely different parts and have no effect or relation to the other.
a ratchet shifter is an actual shifter... (by shifter i mean the plastic/leather thing you put your right hand on, push in a button, and move to "D" for drive, "R" for reverse and "P" for park.
a SHIFT KIT, are internal transmission pieces that increase the firmness and quality of the actual changing of gears within the transmission
if your interested... i have a brand new, in the box b@m "transpak" shift kit and overhaul kit in the "parts for sale" forum at a good discount.
