series 1,2,3 carrier..??
series 1,2,3 carrier..??
so i have apparently got 2:73 gears in this 93 Z car i just got. i want 3:42s. what am I gonna have to do and how much might it cost? how is a carrier changed out? Thanks.
Well you have three options since you want 3.42's.
Option I:
To start out with you have a 2 series carrier. This means you can get some 3.42 that are for Series 2 carrier from Richmond, Precision or Strange. These gears will have a thick ring gear compared to series 3 gears.
Option II:
Since the stock series 2 carrier isn't all that great to begin with, you can convert over to series 3 carrier, the cheapest ones I have found are the SLP Takeoff Zexel Torson Carriers. They are about $99+shipping. Once you have this you can get some 3 series 3.42 gears. I would get some Motive Performance Gears.
Option III:
You can find get the stock 10 bolt rearend that already has the factory 3.42's and swap the whole rear out.

Be prepared for probable gear whine if you use Richmond or Strange especially with a 2 series carrier.
Get the Motive gears with the torsen carrier. My 3.73's are perfectly quiet and no posi clutches to wear out.
My Motive 3.42's were also very quiet before I changed them.

ok..
tell me about changing from a 2 to a 3 series carrier- is this a big job that needs to be done by a pro with clearance meauring tools and a lift rack? or is this a jack stand/driveway job? I have plenty of wrench turning and engine building experience, but never done gears or trannys.i dont want to
my rear end! I want to hit the accelerator and go
yeah! speed! So how much will i expect to spend ya think on both a series 3 carrier and gears? One more thing- with a 3 series carriers able to install 3:73s also? I'm saving this thread with the brands you recommended also. Thanks for all the info!!!!

gears 200-240 for motives depending on who has them. Got mine from SLP cause Thunderracing was backordered but 40.00 cheaper.
torsen carrier(originally installed on SS models) 100.00
Install kit 80-100. (you don't want to have to redo it)
My excellent mechanic (who runs 10's on the weekends in a big block monte carlo) installed my gears in 4 hrs and charged me 250.00
So we're looking at about 700.00 with shipping.
There's M6 guys selling their 3.42s when they go 4.10s so you can pick used factory gears for 50-75 dollars if you want to save money.

so these 3:42s..I could get by with them for now until i save enuff $$ to go with a new carrier/gears/install kit and labor? will these factory 3:42s fit in my series 2 carrier like it is till i get the $$..???
Thanks
Thanks
No the cheap used 3.42's will only fit a 3 series carrier if they're factory. A 3 series carrier will hold 3.23 to 3.73 and even 4.10 (with some minor mods) I got a used set of 2 series Strange 3.42's from gears'r'us and they whined so loud I wrapped the rear end in fiberglas insulation.(which worked ok)
