self build t-56?

just how difficult is it to rebuild a t-56? i have pretty good skills and a buddy of mine has a knack for taking things apart and actually seeing them work again. i would not be in a hurry because it is not a daily driver. any input? the car has 136k on the clock. it may not need it right now. but, anything i could look for that might let me know it is close? thanks guys.

With a transmission you need to understand powerflow, or atleast it helps alot. You will need a manual and follow everystep. If its anything like building an automatic(wich im sure is not as hard) you should be ok. I would really suggest some one supervising you your first time, some one who knows how to build one.

I tore into mine having never done one before and didn't find it to be particularly difficult. There is a .pdf manual floating around online somewhere that I would suggest finding.

Re: self build t-56?

Mine is in pieces at home right now, and i'm going home this weekend from school. I'll try to remember to take some pics of it and post them here. Quite interesting to see what's inside this booger.

Following the manual, it isn't too hard. The press pins and snap rings will give you a fit though, and there's quite a number of parts to keep track of (gears, bearings, rings, etc). It took me roughly 2 hours to get it stripped down to where i could pull the main case off to access the 1-4 gearset (you have to start at the tail housing and pull out all of the 5th, 6th, and reverse related stuff to be able to pull the main housing off). The only things i can see where you might have major trouble is replacing some of the bearings (need some kind of press) and setting the shaft end-play (VERY important that you get this right). The bearings all look and feel about new in mine, so i'm not replacing them. I won't be able to work on it until this summer though, money is tight and i don't have time to work on it.

Hope to have some pics up by sunday or monday.

Re: self build t-56?

Send me an e-mail where you can recieve good-sized files (Like 3-5 megs), and I'll send you the 3 documents that I've collected on rebuilding the T-56; including the Factory Service Manual, a FAQ, and a DIY with wonderful pictures.

I'm actually in the process of doing a rebuild myself, including a Viper output shaft conversion, new syncros, 3-4 fork, and full cryo treatment.
