Reverse & skip shift problems w/ M6
Reverse & skip shift problems w/ M6
Hi All,
Recently my slave cylinder gave out and I took it to my local dealer to get repaired. I also had them do the clutch while they had it apart and now I have the car back w/a few other problems. The car seems to take a lot more effort to get in to reverse...It engages fine but takes a lot more force to push it to the right. I also noticed my skip shift eliminator does not seem to be working any longer since I got the car back. I installed this SLP part myself when I first got the car and have never had any problems. Now the dreaded 1st to 4th shift is back. Are the two problems related. I thought I read something about the reverse solenoid going for tough reverse issues. I confronted the mechanic who worked on the car about the reverse problem when I got the car back and he said it had nothing to do with changing clutch/slave cylinder. Of course this guy didn't act real professional when I talked to him plus he left a wrench wedged in the passenger side console/carpet. So much for certified mechanics. On another note a couple of times it sounded like some kind of sparking or scraping was coming from the tranny area while coming to a slow stop. Car runs good though and no check engine light is on. Any ideas for me when I take it back to the dealer
thanks

Sounds like they didn't reconnect the harness to the reverse lockout solenoid. When there's no power to the solenoid, its very hard to move the lever into the reverse slot. Sounds like they did hook up your skip-shift solenoid. Apparently they got confused and hooked up the wrong one, and didn't hook up the other one.
Might want to add a "signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, mods, etc. From the question, its a 4th Gen. But which year - an LT1 M6 wouldn't need anything to be "apart" to replace the slave cylinder. It just bolts on externally to the bell housing. So no need for the mechanic to touch the connections on the side of the tranny. An LS1 M6 would be a different deal, since the slave cylinder is mounted concentric to the tranny input shaft, and would require the tranny to be pulled, requiring all theharness connectors to be unplugged.

Sorry about not having a signature yet...I'm new here and still learning my way around. My car is an '02 SS Camaro with the M6 pretty much all stock.
Anyway I think I found the problem. Crawled underneath the car today and it looks like when they were were reassembling, the SLP skip shift eliminator plug extension confused them. Turns out they hooked this extension up to the reverse lockout solenoid plug and then into the correct location on the tranny. The skip ship solenoid no longer had the slp extension I vaguely remembered installing a few years back. I took off the skip shift eliminator plug from the reverse lockout solenoid plug & plugged it back into the skip shift solenoid plug & plugged each back into their proper location on the transmission & then took it for a spin and BINGO. Getting into reverse is a breeze just as before & the SLP skip shift eliminator is working again since I no longer have to shift from 1st to 4th at certain RPM's. I guess even the pro's should label their parts before disassembling. Now the question is do you think I did any damage to any of the parts while driving on it for a week like this? I know accidents happen but I think the dealer should know about this in case anything happens and especially since the mechanic basically blew me off when I complained about not being able to get it into reverse the day I picked it up. Hope this might help anyone else who may be having a similar problem
