Reluctor Ring question

I have a 97 Z28 and ordered a Strange 12 bolt from them, they told me they needed my backing plates and reluctor rings (4 channel set up).

The backing plates were easy to get off.. my question is, how can i safely get off the reluctor rings? I tried ordering two new ones from chevy, but they dont seem to have them available without buying new axle shafts, (unless they are mistaken) which i dont want or need. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: Reluctor Ring question

If you have traction control, you don't have a reluctor on the ring gear. The reluctors are made as part of the axles.

Re: Reluctor Ring question

ok, i was using the wrong word then. Which is probably why i couldnt find the part.

i think they are talking about my exciter rings. Ive heard both terms used. They are on both axle shafts and are the toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads to determine the correct wheel speed.

Whichever term you use to describe them, they are part of the axle and not separate from what I can tell.

Re: Reluctor Ring question

They are not part of the axles, but they are pressed on the axles. They easily come off with a small prybar or better yet use a press. Just be careful not to damage the teeth.

As for buying these separately, GM only sells them with the axles. Nothing like disassembling a complete rear to get them.
