Rebuilding rear

Hello all. I've been having bad gear whine and a clunk coming from the rear of the car when i let off the gas then get on it again so I'm looking at having the rearend rebuilt. I would like to replace all the bearings, ring and pinion, and possibly the posi unit. Should I get a aftermarket posi or just get another OEM one. I've seen the eaton posi in catalogs and I like the fact it is rebuildable. Is there any other options I should consider? I don't really need anything fancy just quiet and dependable and perferably cheap.

Carriers (posi) are not cheap. Unless it's going out I wouldn't advise getting one. The other thought is a good idea. Thunder Racing sells a Ring & Pinion package for $400 that includes the ring & pinion gear in your choice of ratios, an aluminum diff cover, and all the bearings, seals, etc to make your axle like new. It's what I'll be getting soon to go in my pile of stuff to do to my car this spring. They also sell the deluxe install kit that includes wheel bearings, etc. for a little more.

Oh and BTW the clunk could very likely be from your U-Joints. They're cheap, but you have to press them in and out. If you don't have the hardware you might want to just take the driveshaft out and let a shop do it.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I should have said cheaper than the eatons' $400 price tag. I am a little worried that it might be going out. The other day I got stuck in my driveway because one wheel was spinning in some loose gravel and the other was not moving. Sometimes it makes weird noises going around corners too.

I'll have to check the u-joints again. I looked at them a while back but I could not see any excess movement in them. The rebuild kit it does sound like a good deal! Now I just have to find a dependable shop.

Thanks again
