I can get a remanufactured trans with a warranty for about a thousand bucks. How much is the average cost for a rebuild on these transmissions? I know it needs new bearings, syncros and probably an input counter shaft and an output shaft. Where should I take it in Michigan?

From your post it sounds like you broke the same ouput shaft that I did. I could be wrong, a description of your symptoms would be helpful. My output shaft broke where it splined with the main shaft. I lost fifth, sixth and reverse gears. If you think you broke a shaft I would go with a rebuilt with a warranty for a grand.
I replaced the output shaft and a couple of shims and seals. I would guess that I payed about $760 for the output shaft and about $100 for the rest of the parts that I needed. I got the parts for cost plus 10% because I worked for a Jeep dealer at the time and we had a good relationship with the Chevy dealer down the street. My total cost was about $900, but I had acess to a lift and I got lucky with my first t-56 rebuild . It broke at 50K and now it has 101.2K. I hope this helps.
