Rear Pinion Seal?

just installed a new rear in my friends car, and all went well. then when we filled the rear with fluid the front of the rear (at the yoke) was ever so slightly dripping about 2 times a minute. over night i rested a cup under where the drips were and there was about 1/4" filled with fluid... i was thinking that initially this was caused because we did not torque down the pinion shaft bolt enough to crush the crush collar, but i may be wrong... any thoughts?

Re: Rear Pinon Seal?

Would seem like the seal is damaged in some way or it's the wrong seal. Tightening up the pinion nut shouldn't have anything to do with how it seals since the seal is pressed in. Definitly gonna have to figure that one out before a drive though or your gonna have a messy underside from that fluid flying off the pinion yoke.

Did you put some sealant on the splines of the yoke and under the washer behind the pinion nut. If you didn't that is probably where your leak is.

Re: Rear Pinon Seal?

well he got the rear NOS from a shop online, and the seal just comes out... it wasnt pressed in, so i think thats the problem... do you mean machine pressed, or rubber hammer pressed, its been a while since i saw my gears get installed... because i dont think the seal is damaged... it looks like the seal is spinning WITH the yoke... which means its not pressed...

and rngilliland, there was/is sealant on there, when it was shipped

sounds like too small a seal to me, and yes hammer pressed using a something flat like a big washer should work. just make sure it goes in flat and all the way.
