Rear Gears Recommendation
Re: Rear Gears Recommendation
depends on what you wanna do with the car. If its mainly a street car, aka daily driver, 3.73s would b more streetable in my opinion, although i know some ppl with 4.11s on a daily driver. If you go to the strip a bit, 4.11s would be a good choice. Either way, you cant go wrong! Both are better then stock... obviously

Re: Rear Gears Recommendation
If you do a lot of highway then think you would like 3.42 better than 3.73.If you don't do much highway go with 3.73 .If you track the car then 4.10 might be alright but you will pull quite a bit of revs on the highway with these even with the overdrive. You will likely get more 1/4 mile peformance benefits with a nice stall say 3200 to 3500 rather than 4.10 gears.
I went with 3.42 in my lt1 and they were a huge improvement over the stock 2.73 gears.I hate 2.73s!!!
You should find out what gears you have now..they will be 2.73 or 3.23.3.23 aren't bad especially when combined with a nice stall.

Re: Rear Gears Recommendation
What do you want your car to do?
I have an A4 w/4.10's, and I still daily drive my car (well, not since the snow fell, but anyways...) on the highway, and I usually cruise around ~75 mph, so roughly ~2800 RPM (and sometimes I'll cruise at ~80 mph, which is around ~3100 RPM). I had 3.73's in the car summer of '03, but they whined like crazy.....went back to the factory 2.73's for awhile.
In all honesty, I kind of miss the 2.73's for where the downshift points were.....even upto ~80 mph, when you hit it, the tranny would kick back to 2nd gear and launch like a *****!!!
I have to pull the shifter back to 3rd to get the same results now with 4.10's (although it pulls when I do
). The difference between 3.73's and 4.10's is nil. Between 2.73's and either is a big difference though...especially for city driving.
1/4 mile, I actually need a stall converter, because with traction, the car bogs off the line. Yes, even with 4.10's
. I'd like to see what 2.73's with a ~3500 stall would feel like. Probably do better in the 1/4 mile, and get better fuel mileage

Re: Rear Gears Recommendation
believe it or not i discussed this in a nother post, but my car came from the factory with 3.42's in it, i did the math, counted the teeth and it all checked out, the differential cover had never been off till i counted the teeth for gettin so much crap about people thinkin that i'm lying, its still a mystery to me why i have them cause my dad was the origional owner and i live with him still (i'm 19) and he never did anything to it. you guys can do the math yourselves, at 80 in overdrive im doin 2500 rpm, at 70 in 3rd which is a 1:1 ratio im doin about 3,125 ish rpms, it was around that. if anyone can explain why i got the 3.42s from the factory tell me please, its a 2002 arctic white Z28
Re: Rear Gears Recommendation
Well they put 3.42 in the manual cars so maybe someone was asleep at the wheel at the factory and installed 3.42 gears..maybe they were out of 2.73 or 3.23 gears. If you are 100% sure then great. And I would consider keeping them and just getting a nice stall now.
