Rear end whine

Hello,

I just picked up an 02 Z28 6 speed with 67k miles. The car is great, but the rear seems very loud compared to other fbodies I've driven. The rear end whines constantly at the same volume (but increasing pitch) at increasing speeds. If I go into a turn, the whine becomes dissonant (the wheels traveling at different speeds maybe?). If I push in the clutch or put the tran in neutral, the whine goes away.

The day before I bought the car, the mechanic replaced the pinion seal and made sure to add GM LSD additive when refilling the diff. The car did sit for 2 months before that without being driven, so my hope is that slowly the rear end will quiet down over the next few weeks. I know I didn't buy a luxury car, but this car would actually be pretty quiet if it wasn't for the rear end!

I'm glad you posted this.I have a simliar problem but mine almost sounds like a thumping of a bad tire and varies with speed when the car is in gear.I know it's not a tire because I just switiced to the stock rims and tires to store the car and the noise is still there.Any ideas what my problem could be?The rear end has been serviced. Thanks

I hear a similar noise that sounds like a thumping of a bad tire. I'm guessing it's something in the rear end, and it sounds like you'd have to replace the rear end to get rid of it. If that's the case, then I'll just wait until mine goes out and then I'll buy something else.

Does anybody know how much it would cost to replace the pinion bearings if I did go that route?
