Rear end started whining for no reason?

I haven't had any problems with the 10 bolt in my car for as long as i've had it. I've had this 10bolt for probably 8 months or so. I hadn't beat on my car at all any yesterday and i got on the highway and took about a 25 mile trip. When i got to my destination the rear end was whining on deceleration with the car in gear. I did a quick look under the car and checked the fluid level and it was fine. I then drove back up to school and the whine seemed about the same. I went to class today and on the way home the whine has gotten much worse and even does it now when i'm decelerating at low speeds with the clutch in. I've replaced the pinion seal on it when i first put the rear end in, if the nut came loose would it be causing this problem? I know 10 bolts are junk but i really don't want to buy anther one. What causes gear noise on deceleration? can rear ends just go out on their own even with oil in them?

pinion bearing could be on it's way out... Didyou check the content's of the fluid.. I'd suggest feeling for excessive slop in the pinion as well as a fluid change/inspection could give ya more clue's as to where the noise is coming from

You could also have a bad wheel bearing. Does the sound change when you make left and right turns? Usually a bad wheel bearing will stop making noise when you turn one direction, but make noise the other direction or straight.

Well i had to limp the car into my home town from college, its about a 25 mile trip. The whole time the whining just got worse and worse. As i pulled into my neighbor and started to go into the driveway the rear just locked up, thank god i was going really slow. I got out and the pinion nut was laying on the ground. So i had to lay in the street and fix it before it got dark. I've only gone about 5-10mph but the rear seems fine. Its leaking oil but i'm sure the pinion seal got hurt. i'll have to replace it this weekend when i have time and day light, good thing i put red lock tite on the pinion nut.
