you don't rebuild a torsen, you replace it. It doesn't wear out like a clutch/cone type LSD. It is designed to last the life of the car, unless if breaks.

I had one of the bolts that hold the torsen together come out, bounce around the inside of the pumpkin and then almost shoot out of the back of the rear end. It knocked a hole in my TA Cover. Dealer could not get a replacement bolt, just a replacement torsen unit. So I had to pick up some grade 8 bolts and washers, had the diff cleaned and the bolts installed.

My honest opinion find a friend who knows about rear ends before you take it to the dealership and its not under warranty before they shove something up your rear end... $80.00 + an hour just on labor alone.... screw that..

hole in the wall shops or garages 1/2 they dont know **** or they will charge alot to say oh theres nothing wrong and a week later you bring it back cause its not running.... thats my advice

Thanks for all the input guys. None of the techs mentioned U-joints.

The shop dismantled it and said it was the pinion bearings. They thought it sounded like the ring and or pinion gear too but said they looked fine. $375 labor and then $240 parts. I know I could have gotten a Ratech Deluxe Gear Installation kit for half that price but by that time it was already dismantled and I couldn't get the parts soon enough. I wanted to take the opportunity to put 4.10 gears in but they wanted $380 for those and again I couldn't find the parts locally to get a better price so I just skipped them. I busted their ***** for a while but finally relented on the condition that if it still made the noises I wouldn't be paying.

They are a local business with two locations that have been in business for twenty years and only work on trannys and rear ends so I have some faith in them.

I pick it up tommorrow. Fingers crossed. Looks like I may get to keep my baby until the 2010 Camaro comes out after all. Boy have I learned alot about rear ends these last few days!

Any updates? Did that take care of the noises?

Yes, I thought I had already but guess not. Everything is fine now. Doesn't make the jet engine whine or clunking noise. Don't hear a peep out of it. Looks like I will be able to keep my SS until the 5th gen comes out.
