Rear end noise

Ok so I have on 02 camaro ss. Recently I have noticed that when i am taking off from a stop it makes an almost grinding like noise in the rear of the car, doesn't do it when not under throttle or when I get up to speed and im not really accelerating anymore. Then today out of nowhere i started hearing more noise so I decided to take the right rear wheel off so I could spin it freely by hand and listen and it seems the bulk of the noise is coming from what looks like the front of the rear end where the shaft goes in, not totally sure but it's for sure coming from the rear.Any ideas what the culprit may be?I bought the car pretty recently with 98,000 miles on it if that help any.It is an auto car as well.Thanks.

Re: Rear end noise

I would check the fluid first. If it's low, fill it and see if the noise stops. The noise may be from the pinion bearing. Also check the u-joint.

Re: Rear end noise

If it's making noise the damage is already done and wont go away by adding fluid. does the pinion yoke move in and out or side to side?

Probably a good idea to pull rear cover to see whats going on.
