Rear end noise

When I am turning sharply at low speed with the clutch pushed in or neutral (turning into parking space, etc), there is a clunking, popping noise coming from what sounds like the rear end.

I changed the oil in the rear end and used the GM limited slip additive thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. I also changed the tranny fluid. It's still doing it!

With the rear wheels off the ground, if I rock them back and forth, it makes the noise. It is like a banging sound. What the heck is wrong with this car?

Please let me know if that fixes it. Is there anything else I can check before I give up and take it to a shop?

Re: Rear end noise

The sounds are getting worse. Now when I turn left or right, there is a loud screeching sound and the clanking is louder. I have it jacked up right now and checked the rear fluid level...it's fine. Is it normal for the wheels to be able to move forward and reverse about 1 inch before it engages the rearend/drive shaft? I can move the wheels a little and then it clunks when the drive shaft starts to turn. Is this normal?

I am so frustrated with this car. In the past few weeks:

1. There are all these drivetrain noises.
2. Had to replace a few wheels because of a vibration due to bent wheels.
3. The front alignment was way off and ate my tires so bad the belts were exposed. I had the alignment fixed but it's still off because the steering wheel is towads the right a little and it seems like the front end fights itself when going in a straight line.
4. Power steering pump whines when turning (it also was dry a few weeks ago).

What the heck else will go wrong? I should have never sold my '02 Z28.

Re: Rear end noise

My car is in the air right now, but i wont be done soon because i also lost my posi unit and have to replace it, and while im under there im going to do gears too. but i will be replacing u-joints right after but it will be awhile till i can say if it was the fix or not. i imagine so because they have 146xxx miles on them. everything eles in the diff looked to be okay except for the posi, but ill let ya know if i have it done before you.

Re: Rear end noise

Sounds like the diff might already be shot. The screetching is due to the axle's sliding out just a little. Don't be too alarmed though, your c-clips are still in the end of your axles, all thats happening is the axle is being pushed out enough to put some pressure on the rotor, and is rubbing the mounting bracket for the caliper. Mine does it, and my past 3 rears have done it.
