rear end knocking, getting worse

hey, i have a 94 ta lt1 a4 with stock everything so far. i have a problem that is getting worse. when i am at a low speed (5 or so mph) i hear a knocking in the rear. sounds like some one is hitting my car with a bat or something. i thing it may be the rear end gears or universal ball joints. the knocking like i said is more pronounced at a low speed and it is in a rythem. knocks about every second. i hope its the rear so i can get rid of my 2:73 and put in a 3:73

You may need some limited slip additive. Does it happen when turning?

yes it does seem like it knocks when i am turning at first, but now its constant wheather i am turning or going straight. iv also notice when i guned it on a dirt road that one wheel spun further than the other. i am clue less what it could be.

well, when a friend of mine put 4.11s in his 97 rear, he took some teeth off the ring gear at the dragstrip, and that was a knocking sound
?

ill be taking it apart when it stops raining to see what it is. im pretty sure its not the ring gear because it would do it when i am up to speed too.
