Angry Rear End Help 97 Z28

I have a problem I guess I have a stock Torsen Differential in my car.
And it is toast.
What's my cheepest way out here.
I was thinking of going to a slavge yard and getting an open Differential from a camaro with drum on it.
Or I could always put the Differential back in but that would put more metal in it right?
I need some options here.

Thanks,

Chris

personally, i wouldn't skimp on the diff...if you put an open diff in, you're definitely going to miss the posi. a salvage yard may have a decent specimen for you, but you don't know what it's been through.

it's too bad SLP stopped selling those take-off Zexel-Torsens for $99...if i had known i would have bought 1 or 2 extra at the time...

in any case, if i were you, i'd try to save up the cash and get yourself a new heavy-duty Auburn or Eaton posi.

Well I would miss the posi if it ever worked.
The year and a half that I have had the car it has never worked.
I took the Differential apart and it has no clutches in it at all.
Just two spider gears and two big gears with nothing behind them.
Thats why I think it is a Torsen.
Looks like I might have to buy a new diff.
The one in the slvage yard has 3.42 gears in it witch means it's on a series 3 carierr right?
I won't be able to put my 2.73 ring gear on it right?
And I don't have the tools to set up new gears or the know how right now.

Thanks for any more input,

Chris

When you say the torsen is "toast", I'm assuming you mean that the internals actually broke, right? (one of the gears or something broken? ).

When you say that the "posi" hasn't worked in a year and a half, how do you mean? Since you've got the diff apart, and you've seen what it looks like with those worm gears and such, you do realize that a torsen operates differently than a true "posi" right? This thread from a few days ago has some detail about how the torsen works (there's a link halfway down that gets really technical).

For drag racing, you're better off with the auburn (or an eaton) posi.

Like I said the inside has no clutches in it at all Just two spider gears and two big gears with nothing behind them.
With lines on the outside of the gears like threads that screw into the case.
And they look chewd up.
And I have always had the one wheel wonder.
I wish could be more clear about this
Hope that cleard it up a little.

Thanks,
Chris

I see those units all the time on Ebay for the same $99.

Sounds like this differential. That's an Auburn, not a torsen.
