Rear end gears question
Rear end gears question
I looked up my rpo codes to find out that I only have a 2.73 (GU2) final gear ratio. I have a complete 10blt axle from my 93 S10 that I upgraded to a 8.8 rear axle. Are the gears from the s10 and 01 z28 the same? The gear ratio in the s10 is 3.42, is it worth upgrading to this ratio or should I just get some new 3.73's?
As far as I know, the S10 gears will work. I'm almost positive that I've heard of folks putting the S10 part number 4.10 gears into their F-Bods. But, I'm not 100% sure on that.
You've got the 2.73 gearing. From the various F-Bods I've driven, a 3.42 rear works really nice with the A4 tranny. Combine a 3.42 rear with a 3000 stall converter and you've got a nice street car that launches pretty hard.
If you really want to launch, throw a set of 3.73's in the rear and a 3500 stall. Hit the gas, pray for traction, and hang on !
When I had the A4 Z28 (before it was wrecked) I was planning to go with a 3.42 gear and 3000 - 3300 stall converter.

I've been looking at prices online and come to the conclusion that brand new gears really aren't that expensive and would probably be better than the gears out of an axle with 120k+ miles on it.
I plan on getting a 3200-3500 stall converter, so would 3.73 be too much for a mostly daily driver? I know new tires will be a must, but this thing will see highway and freeway driving and I don't want to be at 3,500rpm at 70mph. I was thinking that the 3.42 would be the perfect comprimise.
