rear end dilema

Hello everyone.....hope I can get some much needed help with this.
I have a 78 camaro z28....350 been bored 40 over. It has a 3 speed automatic..brand new rebuilt with a shift kit. The problem is..when im driving at around 65 to 70 mph..it sounds as if I should be in 4th gear. Rpm is at 3500 at 65. I havent the slightest clue what kind of rear end is in it. But from talking to some local gear heads...they seem to think it has a 4.10 rear end.
I do not have the know how to change gears in the rear end...and have heard that it can be quite tricky. ALSO....I obviously dont have a good cruising (highway) speed either. Would a 3.08 or 3.42 still give me a good highway cruising speed?
