Hey, I have the same problem. Started last week. I went down the driveline making sure everything was tight. Trans, Trans mount, u-joints, torque arm, LCA's and shocks. ALL Good!
I opened up the rear end and found a little metal in the old gear oil. Ring an pinion look fine, nice even wear across the teeth.
No end play in the ring. I checked torque specs on the bearing caps. Closed it up and added 2 qt syn 75w-90 and GM L/D additive. Still pops around turns. It hooks fine in a straightline. I went out tonight and hammered it with my Nitto DR's out back. Tapped off a new best 12.96@ 110. Any how I plan to open it up this weekend and look again. My guess is either
1) bad Z/T worm gears

2) carrier bearing

3) axle shaft bearing.

4) axle splines are torn up.
I thought I would reply and tell you want I knew as no one responded to my post.

Question Driveline - Carrier Bearing info

Hey there, just finished reading your post/reply ... I have a 1995/3.4 V6 which has a 2 piece driveline/ center support bearing/ or carrier bearing. 3 questions .... #1 Do you have any thoughts on why Chevy would fabricate a 2 piece driveline for this car? #2 Have you come across anyone who has converted to a one piece driveline/ if so ... any problems? #3 I have also been told the carrier bearing can be packed with (cardboard) lol .. as to lower the honing noise that drives me insane. Do you have any suggestions as to how this irrating noise can be lowered if not stopped? Yes, all of these before mentioned things have now caused the rear-end to need exstensive repair .....

Unhappy Good Luck

Thanks for your reply .... if it helps any I can tell you this much.
I took my car into a shop ( wil not mention the name ) to have the rear-end checked out because of the noise. The guy put a saver bearing on the rear left ( not needed ), he failed to put one on the right rear side ( needed badly ) .... which caused the rear-end to get hot/ gear teeth began to fray/chip and has also damaged axle. Needless to say ... I was and still am extremely angry. It took me a good 6 months of phone calls, but I finally beat the case .... The company refunded the money I paid to them and also refunded the money I put out to have another shop fix my car to where I can at least drive it until a new rear-end is put in. All in all , I would say .. you should have the axle checked out. Good luck to ya!

Found problem

I took my z/t out today. Ran a 12.86 @ 110. Went back to run again since I bogged it at the line around 2000 RPM's
2nd run was dumped at 2500 on my Nitto DR'S. PartY Over!

The Z/T has 8 worm type gears inside the carrier on opposite sides of two large gear that they mesh with. The two large gears are splined inside to match the axle. The large gear on the driverside of the Z/T carrier was worn where it meshed with the Z/T worm gears. IT would slip when making turns. New Z/T and bearings go in this weeked. Then maybe I'll better that 12.86
If you guy's pull your cover look carefully at the gears that spline with the axles. The wear was on the outer edges.

so maybe its my axle? it doesnt do ithardly when im driving straight or even makeing turns faster than 3-5 mph. it only does it going slow over an incline or bump or somethinng to either make the carr sway to one side usually the right or a bump to jog it up a little. im thinking it might be the suspension somewhere butit just doesnt sound like it.

Exclamation

I doubt the axle is bad. The worm gears and axle spline gear are
the weak link.
I was reading all the prior post and have a question.
Is the rearend issue on your 95 z28? A 95 would have a Auburn not a Z/T from the factory. Right?

My reply was to EaC95Z28. I been posting back thinking he was running a zexel torsen. I think both of you guy's are running
auburns. Clutches/Springs. Zexel/Torsens have helical gears.

Sorry! I have been chimming in thinking your running a Zexel like me. I have no clue on the Auburn. I just came from the garage. I put my new bearings on the new SLP Z/T. Better piece than what I had. The paddle between the axle spline gears is much thicker.
I have digital pics if I knew where/how to upload them. I paid $99.00 for the SLP Z/T. I do believe it would work in your 95
sorry for the confusion

if the clunking only (for the most part) happens when u turn i can almost guarantee the problem is in the worm gears in the posi....
