Rear End about to blow??

Hey guys heres my deal.
I just came home from my second night ever bringing my stock 95 Z/28 A4 to the dragway.
First run went fine and ran a 14.2@98mph.
Second run I felt gears slipping/grinding slightly and a slight bang.
Third pass was scary, right when I left the line the gears slipped almost all through first gear, then same thing when it slammed into second. I could hear grinding/slipping noises coming from my center console area so i thought it was the tranny, but the loud bang noise came from back of the car.

So I threw in the flag and on my way home I accelerated from red lights and I'm pretty sure its the rear end. Loud bangs very rough take off. I'm afraid its about to blow.
Any help with this would be appreciated the gears are stock whatever they came with from the factory, I'm gonna look up what gears are in it tomorrow pretty sure 2:73's.
Thanks

Have you checked the rear transmission mount? That would explain the bangs. But at a 14.2 doesn't sound right if you're slipping and your car is stock.

Definitely not an engine tech question, but you can always take off the rear end inspection cover and ....inspect it.

No, I just got home I'm going to bed I'm gonna investigate tomorrow. The rear tranny mount could be loose are you saying? I'm thinking driveshaft, rear end, tranny mount, I'm not sure what it is I don't have much experience as far as knowing from sounds having my license for 2 yrs. What should I look out for tomorrow?

I should add that it has only 40,000 miles so its not old and beaten. Also my rear diff cover has a leak, very small but enough to see small amount of fluid on the cover.

stock transmission mounts blow out all the time...the are very easy to change and only cost like 10 bucks maybe even less, but you should upgrade to an aftermarket unit if you plan on rodding on your car a little bit:fact

Well, if you take the cover off and you find a bunch of ground metal shavings attached to the magnet that is on the inside of the cover, it could be on its way out the door. I know mine is cashed, but somehow still manages the times in my sig consistently and howls badly driving down the road. With a spare on hand though, I knew this would happen, it's on borrowed time. Looks to be material from the differential, judging by the visibly worn gears etc. Also the fluid may be metallic in color when changing.

If not, could be your u-joints or the bolts attached to the rear of your driveshaft, your tranny mount could have broke, ie, the rubber cracked away from its metal bracket. A new poly one will give you a rough ride, but likely last forever if your car is moderately built. A new poly one is around 20 bucks, and since they are nearly universal for quite a few GM applications, they are also easy to find. Good luck.

Sounds almost the same as what happened to me last week, loud noises, grinding noise while moving, the faster i went the louder it got, sounded like it was coming from tranny, all the same symtoms
and on the way to the shop, it just randomly locked the rear wheels up and slid sideways for a good bit. no traffic and i stayed on the road so no extra damage

one of my carrier bolts broke off inside the carrier and was blending around in there for awhile
