rear axle question

I just have a quick question about my rear end. I dropped it from the car yesterday and noticed when I went to push it away that it will only push in a straight line. What could have broke that would "lock" the axles to being forced to turn at the same time?

Thanks. btw the rear end is out of a 94 z28 with 3.23 gears stock. just went through a fence sideways/towards rear driver's axle. I was going to swap it into my new body before i noticed this.

Also, is it wrong of me to not want to use the axle out of my donor body because it was a drag raced 6 speed with slicks? I am afraid that some thing could be damaged in it.

Update. I can make the wheels turn at different rates but it is extremely difficult.

Re: rear axle question

a 94 Z28 would have a Auburn posi differential with cone clutches.
a complete rear out of the car and still with rims/tires on should ONLY move in a straight line, you can't apply the proper forces as the car would to get the clutches to act as clutches. if you were able to 'turn' the rear,it would mean the cone clutches are wore out and then it would act like an open differential.

Re: rear axle question

Wow that was quick. That makes since now, I will be using my rear then.

So I have the rear out of my donor 97 m6 car and I can push it all around side to side and full circles. Is it suppose to do that? My guess is yes because it has the traction control with the two rear wheel speed sensors.

Thanks for helping me out!

Re: rear axle question

the 97 M6 rear would/should heve also had an Auburn, unless something else was put in.
acting like that would mean a wore out auburn OR the original carrier was replaced with a torsen posi or an open carrier.
pop the covers and post pics of each.
