Rear axle play
Recently i put a new rear end on the car and ever since ive been hearing this clunk from the rear whenever i go over any little bump, you can actually feel it if you put your hand on the floor behind the passenger seat. I took the car to a shop to see what the problem was. The mechanic told me i have too much play in the rear axle which causes the clunking noise when i go over any little bump. If this is the problem how can i fix this? He said i need new gears. im just really p****d!
Re: Rear axle play
Get under there and make sure nothing is bumping the floor board. If something is, you should see some marks on the floor board from what ever is hitting (paint, dents, scratches ect). If it is slop in your rear, I would guess it's probably backlash thats too far out. You wouldn't need new gears for that, but you would have to pull the cover and reset up for proper backlash, which is just a matter of reshimming the carrier. Make sure you have everything tight back there too (torque arm, shocks, sway bar ect...). Hope that helps.
